Nantahala - Land of the Noon Day Sun
Our community is located on the North shore of Nantahala Lake in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. At 3012’ it is the highest elevation recreational lake over 1500 acres east of the Missisippi River. We are just south of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Aquone, Macon County, NC.
We are surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest and served primarily by the nearby towns of Andrews, NC and Franklin, NC. Nantahala Lake is a clear deep (over 230’ in the area of the dam) impoundment that is used to generate electricity. The lake supports a natural population of Large and Smallmouth Bass, Kokanee salmon, Walleye, Rainbow and Brown trout. Most of its shore is in the Nantahala National Forest and is heavily forested. At an elevation of over 3,000 feet, we enjoy beautiful mountain views, some snow in the winter, and long, very comfortable, summers |
Friends of Nantahala Lake (FONL)
Founded in 2019, the Friends of Nantahala Lake is a voluntary lakewide association of area HOA's, commercial businesses and individual property owner members, who have come together in the mutual interests of maintaining and enhancing the area of and around Nantahala Lake.
Our Mission is to preserve and protect the natural beauty and integrity of Nantahala Lake and its surrounding areas for the betterment and enjoyment of all. The Association functions primarily as an advocate of good lake management by providing a means for addressing and solving lake issues through targeted initiatives.
It is in this capacity that FONL is working to strengthen relationships with Duke Energy as owner of the lake, advocating with supporting local services, and serving as a conduit for information between our members, Duke Energy, Macon County, and other local officials.
